CALD community

Culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) is a term often used to describe people living in Australia who were born overseas, or people living in Australia who have parent(s) or grandparent(s) born overseas, and are predominately from non-English speaking or non-Western countries.

Cultural diversity is valuable for a community, including the different skills, perspectives, traditions, values and experiences these groups and individuals may have.

According to the Census 2016:

  • Just under 24% of the population were born overseas
  • 17% of the population had both parents born overseas
  • 13.5% of the population spoke a language other than English at home.

This cultural and linguistic diversity is a great strength for our municipality, but members of CALD communities often don’t enjoy equal access to information and opportunity.
