The Significant Tree Register was gazetted on 22 December 2016 and included in the Hepburn Planning Scheme through Amendment C54. The amendment implements the recommendations of the Hepburn Significant Tree Register - Statements of Significance Report, by applying a Vegetation Protection Overlay or Heritage Overlay to significant trees or tree planting.
This amendment helped to establish a register of significant trees. Any additional trees nominated after the completion of the amendment meeting the threshold are proposed to be added to the register with the intent of including them in a future planning scheme amendment.
At the Ordinary Council Meeting on 16 June 2020, Council adopted the Hepburn Heritage Strategy 2020-2030(PDF, 2MB) and committed to report annually on Heritage issues across the shire. In terms of the significant tree register, council continues to welcome nominations for the register.
The Hepburn Significant Tree Register is a means to record and use information to conserve and manage significant trees in the municipality. Trees on the register may have values relating to visual, historic, botanic, cultural, commemorative, or other significance.
