The Minister for Energy, Environment & Climate Change, the Hon. Lily D’Ambrosio, has announced that the Victorian Government has allocated up to $20 million for upgrades to transfer stations in regional and rural councils to improve processing of glass and organics for recycling.
Mayor, Cr Lesley Hewitt, welcomed the announcement.
"The Hepburn Shire community is always looking for more recycling opportunities. Thank you to the Minister for launching this important funding opportunity for regional councils.
“If successful in securing some of this funding, we could facilitate the necessary improvements to transfer stations to establish drop-off collection points for separated glass and organics,” said Cr Hewitt.
“For regional councils such as Hepburn Shire, our dispersed population and the distances between our townships means having four household bins is not always practical or comes at a significant cost.
“That’s why investing in transfer stations and making improvements to establish drop-off collection points for separated glass and organics is a huge step in the right direction,” said Cr Hewitt.
Council will embark on developing a Waste Strategy later in 2021 when the community will have the opportunity to provide input.
The Transfer Station Upgrade Fund opened on 12 February and closes 26 March 2021 and is open to 48 rural and regional councils.
