At its June meeting Council adopted its first Arts and Culture Strategy. Its aim is to provide a strategic framework for local artists, visitors and each other to grow the vibrancy of Hepburn Shire.
Mayor, Cr Brian Hood, said that Council held lengthy discussions with Djaara, who provided culturally significant insight and perspective to guide Council in bringing this Strategy to fruition.
“We also consulted with local art groups, historical societies and people from creative industries. This Arts and Culture Strategy places value on a healthy arts and culture scene for our Shire and the broader community. We are committed to maintaining continuous cultural connection with Indigenous artists, as well as access and equity for all artists. It supports the inclusion of stories and experiences of groups including women, LGBTIQA+ and Djaara, all of whom continue to contribute significantly to the region. We are also committed to providing creative spaces and places and to profiling local heritage,” said Cr Hood.
The strategy provides five key focus areas with a set of objectives that will strengthen and guide the future direction for arts and culture in partnership with our community.
“We are blessed with many studio-based artists, commercial galleries, dedicated art groups, live music venues and museums. The strategy continues to support and guide Council’s collections through several local museums run by committed and knowledgeable local volunteers. In these heritage spaces, we preserve stories of our past and exhibit narratives for future generations to learn from,’ he said.
Council will set out clear and specific deliverable objectives and will seek partnership and external funding opportunities to deliver on these and build on existing programs and relationships.
